Scientists at NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured some excellent imagery as the sun emitted a mid-level solar flare.
The flare was a powerful burst of radiation that cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground.
However, when they are powerful enough, solar flares can disturb the atmosphere where GPS and communication signals travel.
This flare is classified as an M6.5 flare.
