WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - If it’s true that love knows no boundaries, Alex Montgomery, 20 and Wellington native Lauren Schuhle, 20 exemplified that with their underwater engagement. The couple was scuba diving in Marathon on Saturday, July 12 when Alex popped the question underwater. Now, the video of their special moment is getting quite the attention on YouTube.
Both are students at the University of Florida; the couple has been dating for over a year and a half. And going the traditional route when proposing didn’t even cross Alex’s mind.
“Everything Lauren and I do is outside, that’s the kind of couple we are. We like to get out and do adventurous things,” he said. So it’s no surprise that the Naples native waited until the couple, along with friends and family, embarked on a scuba diving trip on July 12 to make his move.
“I didn’t want to do something status quo,” Alex said. With the help of friends and family, he orchestrated his plan; burying a treasure chest under the sea containing a laminated flip-book with a message for Lauren, a proposal banner, and of course, the ring.
“She was so overwhelmed and everything at once,” Alex said about his fiancé’s reaction to the proposal. “She didn’t cry right away, but she grabbed on to my arm, it was pretty cool and exciting.”
Alex made sure their special occasion was captured on camera, then he created a video to share with family and friends who didn’t witness the big moment underwater. He posted the video on YouTube, and less than 24 hours later, the proposal had over 500 views.
“We wanted to show grandparents and people who couldn’t be there, we had no idea so many people would be interested in seeing it,” Alex said.
The couple hasn’t started planning their wedding yet, however Alex said they’re thinking about an August 2015 wedding.
