(NBC News) Thousands lined up Monday night for the midnight release of "Call of Duty: Ghosts", the latest entry in the popular "Call of Duty" video game series.
The franchise has been a top seller in recent years, and "Ghost" is just the latest highly anticipated release in what has already been a banner year for the video gaming industry.
"Grand Theft Auto V" racked up more than a billion dollars in sales in just three days when it was released in September.
"According to some metrics, 'Grand Theft Auto 5' made more money in less amount of time than anything in the history of pop culture," notes Entertainment Weekly's Darren Franich.
