Fire rescue battles mulch fire along U.S. 27

SOUTH BAY, Fla. - Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue crews are battling a large fire along U.S. 27 that started at a sugar mill this afternoon.

Crews were dispatched to the area of 21250 S. U.S. 27 - near the Okeelanta sugar mill - at 2:25 p.m. in response to two piles of mulch burning.

"These things get pretty big," said fire rescue Capt. Don DeLucia.

Three engines, a ladder truck, two brush trucks, a tender, and a rescue truck were dispatched but two more rescue trucks and two more engine trucks were called to the scene shortly after.

Crews are using tractors to smother the fires and then plan to pour water on them.

Firefighters described the mulch fires as "big" and causing a "large column of smoke."
