Neighbors along the dike worry as Lake Okeechobee rises, Corps starts dike inspections

The Army Corps of Engineers says they are maximizing flows from Lake Okeechobee to manage the rising levels and to prepare for potential tropical activity.

The lake was at 15.62 feet Thursday.

"Lake Okeechobee continues to rise at approximately one half foot per week," Col. Alan Dodd with the Corps of Engineers said.

Residents that live along the dike in Pahokee are beginning to worry.

"I am scared of this dike and I don't care what they have done to it," neighbor Carol Peaden said.

Peaden owns a beauty salon and lives right along the dike.

"This lake has gone up and down so much over the years my poles have rotted and my house shifted," Peaden said.

The Corps says public safety is their top priority and they will continue monitoring the lake levels.
