Where To Retire magazine spotlights St. Lucie County as a place to enjoy your golden years

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. - Florida has long been known as a haven for retirees. But a new publication is highlighting one local area in particular.

The latest issue of "Where To Retire" magazine has St. Lucie County on the cover.

The magazine highlighted the county's affordable housing,  outdoor fun, and the fact that it isn't as crowded as other places.

St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky, who chairs the county's Tourism Development Council, says those were the things that brought him to the area after he retired from the airline industry. "I could have chosen anywhere in the world and I chose St. Lucie County because of the environmentally responsible things the county was engaged in, the unspoiled beaches, and the environmentally sensitive lands."

Right now, the Army Corps of Engineers is working to improve one of the county's best assets, its beaches.

Crews have started to replenish the sand on the south side of the Fort Pierce inlet.  Severe erosion had forced the county to make some emergency fixes before the Corps moved in.  Work is expected to take another several weeks.
