Two US marshals shot in Sebring while serving warrant

One was a St. Lucie deputy serving on a task force

SEBRING, Fla. - A US Marshal and a St. Lucie County Sheriff's detective working on the US Marshal Task Force were shot while attempting to serve a warrant in a cocaine trafficking investigation Wednesday in Sebring.

The shooting occurred around 6 a.m. on a side street off the Sebring Parkway.

One marshal was shot in the hand and the other in the shoulder. Their injuries were said to be non-life threatening.

The St. Lucie County deputy who was shot was identified as detective Paul Pearson, age 33, who has been a member of the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office for 11 years, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.

"Detective Pearson was released from a Sebring medical facility shortly after 11 a.m. He is expected to make a full recovery," the sheriff said in a statement.

"I heard what sounded like firecrackers and opened the front door and saw all the lights and decided to duck back in," Bill Sannin, a neighbor who lives about three houses down and across the street from where the shooting took place, told highlandstoday.com .

Highlands County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Nell Hays says the suspects sought in the home were part of a broader investigation that resulted in six arrests on federal drug charges.

"With the training that we have for high-risk fugitive entries, usually we are very successful where we don't lose law enforcement lives and this was one where, although two were shot, we're thankful they were not life-threatening," US Marshals' Chief Frank Chiumento said at a news conference.

Wfts.com reports the suspects supplied a lot of cocaine throughout Central Florida.

Hays says the suspects involved in the shooting were among those arrested.

According to the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, five of the suspects were identified:
