St. Lucie County firefighters rescue woman in 80s from burning home

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — An early morning fire severely damaged a manufactured home north of Fort Pierce and left a couple, in their 80s, hospitalized in critical condition, according to the St. Lucie County Fire Department.

Both were suffering from smoke inhalation following the fire at 3:42 a.m. in the Fairwinds community. That is east of Interstate 95 and just south of the Indian River County line.

When firefighters arrived, the husband was outside the home yelling that his wife was inside the home in the 14200 block of Cisne Circle. Firefighters encountered intense heat when going in to rescue her.

The fire was limited to the bedroom but the heat was enough to cause minor damage to a neighboring home. Most of the damage was from smoke.

According to family members,  the couple are being treated at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
