St. Lucie County will have at least three shelters open, and a special needs shelter to accommodate more than 1,000 residents who need a safe place to stay during Hurricane Matthew.

But, wanting to do his part to help the community, one business owner is opening his doors to help provide shelter.

Project X Fitness owner, Victor Rivera, says his gym could accommodate a couple dozen people.

The mats at the gym can provide a softer place for people to lay their head to sleep, asking people to bring their own pillows and blankets.

There is also a bathroom and shower.

People should first consider using the county- established shelters, but Rivera hopes to provide another option.

“I just wanted to put it out there just in case so they know there’s an extra, you know, maybe it’s a little closer than some other places. We just wanted to put it out there for everyone to know they have something extra. We want to support the city.”

The gym is located at 1418 SE Huffman Rd in Port St. Lucie.

Other shelter locations in St. Lucie County include the following:

Lakewood Park Elementary School.

Treasure Coast High School

Samuel Gaines Academy.

A special needs shelter is open at the Fenn Center.

The county is considering opening a 4th shelter if needed.
