St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara has a warning for residents.
He says someone is operating a phone scam and is pretending to be a member of the sheriff's office.
The caller says he is Detective Shawn Woods and claims the person he is calling is part of a criminal investigation.
The scammer leaves a phone number that's similar to the main sheriff's office number which is (772) 462-7300.
