PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A deliberately set fire discovered Sunday afternoon caused more than $30,000 in damages at Girl Scout Friendship Park, according to a police report released Thursday and a police spokesman.
Police provided photos showed melted and burned playground equipment at the park in the 300 block of Northwest Heather Street. Officer Tom Nichols, police spokesman, said the fire was no accident.
"That's done on purpose," he said. "It's an arson."
There were no reported injuries.
A parks and recreation official estimated the damages as in excess of $30,000, a police report states.
An officer was dispatched to the park at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
A neighbor told police that at about 1 p.m. she was leaving her home and saw four to five boys riding bicycles in the playground area. She said they got her attention because they were yelling a curse word.
Anyone with information is asked to call Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 800-273-TIPS or police at 772-871-5000.
