PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A Port St. Lucie man is dead after barricading himself inside his home overnight, according to police.
The incident began around 6 p.m. Thursday at a home in the 600 block of Southwest Jeanne Street, which is close to Treasure Coast High School.
Police said the suspect, Wilton Frank Stegkemper, 78, called police to say he wanted to kill himself and had a gun.
After spending several hours trying to negotiate with Stegkemper, negotiations failed, and he sustained a self- inflicted gunshot wound to the head around midnight.
After Stegkemper shot himself, police said he was airlifted to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
