Sportsman's Park basketball courts reopen today, PSL police officer to be stationed there

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — More than two months after the Sportsman's Park basketball courts were closed in the wake of a fatal shooting, the courts are slated to reopen today.

The courts at the park at 201 N.W. Prima Vista Blvd. were closed after the March 14 shooting that left Marcus Samuel, 25, dead.

Port St. Lucie police have said the incident happened after an altercation involving Samuel and Terry McKeliver, now 23, who were playing basketball. Both had handguns.

In response, new police patrols will be placed at Port St. Lucie parks today. In addition, you'll need a photo ID to get a court pass to enter the basketball courts.

Three full-time police officers will now patrol Sportsman's Park, Whitman-Pines Park and other city parks from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m.

There will also be a court monitor on scene at the Sportsman's Park basketball courts to check court passes.

The basketball courts will open at 3 p.m. today.
