Nicole Gainey: Port St. Lucie woman charged with child neglect

7-year-old boy unsupervised at park, police say

Port St. Lucie police charged a woman with child neglect Saturday after finding a 7-year-old boy unsupervised at Sportsmans Park.

Nicole Gainey, 34, who lives in the 600 block of Southwest Ivanhoe Drive in Port St. Lucie, was released from the St. Lucie County Jail on Saturday after posting a $3,750 bond.

Lifeguards spotted the boy sitting alone outside the pool area at Ravenswood Pool at about 4 p.m. Saturday, according to an arrest affidavit. They reportedly had seen him around the pool unsupervised on about five previous occasions.

The boy spoke to them and then crossed six-lane Northwest Prima Vista Boulevard toward Sportmans Park, the affidavit said. There were no cars coming at the time.

Police found the boy in the park playground playing with other children. He had a cellphone around his neck and he said he had just spoken to Gainey, who gives him the phone and allows him go to the park, the affidavit said.

Gainey told police she didn’t think it was wrong to let the boy, who has a learning disability, go to the park by himself, it said.
