A Port St. Lucie teenager was committed under the state's Baker Act after a teacher overheard him talking about school shootings, according to Port St. Lucie police.

Investigators say the 14-year-old had a picture of a shotgun on his phone where he also researched the topic of school shooting.

A shotgun was found at the teen's home, officials said.

Police made contact with the boy's father. Officials say the father turned the gun over, not wanting the weapon in the home anymore. The gun will be destroyed.

The Baker Act is a state law which lets police, judges and doctors order people who appear to be mentally ill and pose a danger to themselves or others for an involuntary psychiatric exam.
