PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Port St. Lucie Police Department needs the public's help identifying a man whom they say is responsible for robbing two people and raping a woman near Mariposa Elementary School early Sunday morning.
Police say four teenage boys and two young women were walking down Mariposa Avenue towards the school just after midnight to hang out.
They told police they passed a man on the way who asked if they wanted to smoke marijuana. Police say they said no and kept walking.
After they had been at the playground for about 20 minutes, police say the man reappeared, pulled out a gun and told them all to get on the ground.
Police say he took one of the teenager's wallets, and a woman's cellphone. He then ordered the women to another area and told them to take off their clothes.
Police say he raped one of the women, then chased the other one down, hit her on the head with his gun and tried to sexually assault her, but ended up running away from the area.
Neighbors say the boys eventually ran to their house for help.
"They were saying that their friend was being attacked and the man had a gun and that they needed someone to call 911 because they didn't have their phones," neighbor April Robinson said.
Police searched heavily in the area with a K-9, officers and air units.
"There's really nobody here at night. It's very quiet, very settled. But, now I guess I have to set the alarm every night now," neighbor Gregory Owen said.
Police are calling this a very bold and brazen act, and highly unusual for the area near the school.
They will be checking surveillance video at the school to see if they can get a better idea of what happened and who is responsible.
