PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Port St. Lucie lacks sidewalks, but construction is adding 28 miles of new sidewalks in the city.
Crews are expected to finish a stretch of sidewalk along Melaleuca Boulevard near Green River Parkway by the end of the month.
Port St. Lucie is getting $13 million from the state for the projects.
City officials said they are focusing on areas around schools after a number of pedestrian accidents over the years.
Currently, the city has 329 miles of sidewalks, which only covers about 15 percent of the city.
All this dates back to the 1950s when Port St. Lucie was designed as a retirement community, and there wasn't a big emphasis on infrastructure.
