Port St. Lucie armed robberies: Couple accused of robbing two elderly women

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Palm Beach Gardens Police Department has custody of two people who police say are responsible for robbing two elderly women this month in Port St. Lucie.

The man and woman were arrested Sunday afternoon in Palm Beach Gardens.

Police are not identifying the suspects yet, but say they were being questioned by detectives at the station Sunday night.

Port St. Lucie police say they had been looking for them for more than two weeks and are now working with Palm Beach Gardens Police and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office in the investigation.

On Feb. 7, the man and woman are accused of robbing a 67-year-old woman outside of the Walmart on St. Lucie West Boulevard.

On Feb. 15, police say they robbed a 77-year-old woman in the same shopping center.

In the robberies, police say the woman would approach the women's cars, hold up a gun and demand their purses before jumping into her partner's getaway car.

Surveillance video also showed the suspects using their victim's credit cards at a gas station and other retail stores shortly after the robberies.

Witnesses described their getaway car as having Illinois tags. Port St. Lucie Police are still waiting to learn exactly where they are from and if they could be responsible for other crimes in the area.
