Police: Girl's suicide attempt leads to man's molestation arrest in Port St. Lucie

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- A 20-year-old man was arrested this week after a young teen girl told police he'd inappropriately touched her beginning when she was about 5 years old, according to records obtained Thursday.

John Anthony Sotolongo, of the 1900 block of Southwest Capeador Street in Port St. Lucie, was arrested Tuesday on a felony lewd/lascivious molestation charge. He was held Thursday in the St. Lucie County Jail.

Port St. Lucie police in May went to a local address after the teen girl apparently took pills in a suicide attempt.

She was taken to St. Lucie Medical Center and told a nurse she wanted to end her life because Sotolongo had touched her inappropriately.

The girl told police the incidents began when she was 5 years old and last occurred when she was 10.

Sotolongo told police the incidents began when he was about 14, saying he touched her inappropriately about two dozen times before he turned 15. He said "everything stopped" prior to his sophomore year in high school.

Police believe the incidents happened between 2002 and 2006.

Sotolongo was held Thursday in the St. Lucie County Jail in lieu of $750,000 bail, a jail official said.
