PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A caretaker has been arrested by the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office and charged with taking $162,000 from an 88-year-old woman.
According to deputies, Maria Daley, 42, was employed as a caregiver for a legally blind woman.
Investigators said the victim intended to pay her $200 a week.
Deputies said Daley filled out checks, and the victim signed them, though she could not see well enough to read them.
Daley, according to her arrest report, then used the money to pay her mortgage and other living expenses.
St. Lucie County deputies said the woman's son discovered the thefts by examining his mother's bank account records.
He has since moved his mother to Massachusetts.
The thefts took place from July 2012 through June 2013, according to investigators.
Daley has been arrested on first-degree felony charges of grand theft from an elderly person.
