Controlled burn ends after smoke impacts Port St. Lucie, Martin County

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Smoke from a controlled burn in Martin County impacted the southern part of St. Lucie County near the Tradition community Tuesday afternoon.

The Florida Forest Service with the Okeechobee District tweeted that the burn was conducted by the South Florida Water Management and affected the Tradition community in west Saint Lucie County and northern Martin County.

A shift in the wind blew the smoke toward Tradition.

Gabe Margasak with SFWMD released the following statement regarding the burn:

"The work by the SFWMD was a 1,600-acre burn in the Allapatah Flats area of Martin County to benefit the ecology of and reduce fuel for wildfires in the area, which had not burned since 2009. The controlled burn was just ending when the winds unexpectedly shifted, sending smoke into residential areas. There were also some other burns permitted by Forestry in the area."
