Alex Romero arrested: St. Lucie Mets Gulf Coast player charged with felony shoplifting

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - St. Lucie Mets Gulf Coast League player Alex Romero has been arrested by Port St. Lucie Police for felony shoplifting, resisting a merchant, battery, and resisting an officer without violence.

He plays catcher under the name of Alex Machillanda with the Gulf Coast Mets.

Around 6:20 p.m. on Monday, Port St. Lucie Police arrested the 21-year-old Romero.  Officers say they had received a report of a shoplifter at the Bealls Department Store at 1713 NW St. Lucie West Boulevard.

A loss prevention officer at the store told police that he had seen Romero, who was carrying a backpack, taking clothing from racks, removing price tags and taking photos of the merchandise with his cell phone.  Romero was then seen entering a dressing room with the clothing and was suspected of concealing the items with his backpack.

The loss prevention officer told police, when Romero was suspected of exiting the store without paying for the items, the store employee tried to stop him.  That's when, the employee said, Romero punched the officer and took him to the ground, slamming his head on the concrete.

Responding police officers witnessed Romero fleeing from the scene on foot.

Port St. Lucie Police officers placed Romero under arrest.  That's when, they say, Romero resisted arrest by yelling and pulling away.  The stolen property was discovered inside the backpack Romero was carrying.
