FORT PIERCE, Fla. - If you’ve driven on Midway Road near Indian River Drive in the past several days, you may have noticed a dragon for sale.
Yes, you read that correctly — a dragon for sale.
John Andrews, an artist, and his wife were visiting friends in Fort Pierce on their way home to Gainesville from South Florida when they decided to see whether they could find any takers for this freestanding recycled metal sculpture at $125,000. They planned to leave town Thursday.
It took Andrews 1,800 hours in 44 weeks to create his masterpiece.
The more than 12,500 scales are unpainted and made from different colored shipping containers that Andrews hand-cut into small pieces. The sculpture, which travels on a trailer, has no support rods or base plates and can be hung to give the appearance of flight.
The dragon, named “Monty,” was inspired by a dog of the same name that died unexpectedly from cancer.
It’s the second dragon Andrews has made. He sold the first to a castle.
