Larry Scott Estes II charged with shooting 7-year-old boy with BB gun

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A 25-year-old man accused of shooting a 7-year-old boy with a BB gun and of knocking him off a couch was arrested Tuesday on a child abuse charge, according to records released Wednesday.

The boy last week told a St. Lucie County sheriff's investigator that he and Larry Scott Estes II, of the 8400 block of Fort Walton Avenue in Lakewood Park, were in the backyard of a home and were going to shoot BB guns. The boy said he lacked the strength to do so.

The boy went inside and noticed Estes pointing a BB gun at him through an open window before he was shot in the lower back/buttocks area.

The boy said he doesn't like Estes and is afraid of him. He said it made him cry and he went to the living room and sat on a couch. Estes, he said, started calling him names and told him to eat something. The boy told Estes he didn't want to eat anything and Estes, knocked him off the couch.

Estes, meanwhile, told investigators he was shooting at a coffee can tied to a tree when the boy stepped in front of him. He said he accidentally shot the boy. He said he never called the boy a name, but "just told him he couldn't be a crybaby," an affidavit states.

Estes said he saw the boy pouting on the couch and tried to tickle him to cheer him up. He said the boy rolled off the couch and wasn't pushed.

Estes said his mother and sister were in the home at the time, but his mother said only Estes and the boy were there.

A deputy learned about the allegations after speaking with a state Department of Children and Families investigator.
