ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A man led Florida Highway Patrol troopers on a slow chase on Interstate 95, spun his car, and kept going until his car stalled, according to FHP reports.
Eventually, troopers charged him with driving under the influence.
John Donofrio, 76, remained at the St. Lucie County Jail Monday in lieu of $76,125 in bond, records show.
A motorist notified authorities at about 12:10 a.m. Sunday that the red car Donofrio was driving was weaving all over the road, according to a Florida Highway Patrol arrest report. That driver followed Donofrio until troopers arrived, it said.
Now with two troopers following him with lights and sirens going, Donofrio continued to drive north at a speed well below the limit, the report said. One trooper used his patrol car to hit Donofrio's car in such a way that it started to spin, it said.
Donofrio regained control and kept going, the report said. Donofrio rammed the rear of a trooper's patrol car, temporarily knocking him onto the shoulder, and continued to drive until his car stalled in the right lane at mile marker 141.5 in Fort Pierce, where he was arrested, according to the report.
