ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. - A 6-year-old child is awake and in guarded condition Monday evening in a West Palm Beach hospital after nearly drowning in a pool in unincorporated St. Lucie County earlier in the day, said Mark Weinberg, spokesman for St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office
Mikedescha Stewart had taken several children with her on a visit to her grandfather's home at 4056 Greenwood Drive when around 6:15 p.m. they noticed the child's absence.
Janiya Ware was found at the bottom of the murky pool water at a depth of about five feet by another child, Weinberg said.
Stewart, who is dating the child's uncle, jumped in the pool and rescued the child. Ronald Smith, Stewart's grandfather, administered CPR until St. Lucie County Fire Rescue paramedics arrived and took the child to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Fort Pierce.
Ware was later flown to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach where she remains hospitalized, Weinberg said.
