Toxic Water: St. Lucie County asks Gov. Rick Scott to declare state of emergency

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - St. Lucie County commissioners Tuesday joined Martin County in asking Gov. Rick Scott to declare a state of emergency for the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie Estuary.

Business owners who rely on the waterways for their livelihood say they've lost thousands of dollars this summer due to the toxic algae and high bacteria levels. 

The problem was created by Lake Okeechobee discharges and run off.
