Robert Bates, person of interest being sought in connection with hit-and-run accident that killed 2

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- The search continues for the man considered a "person of interest" in a hit and run crash that killed two people.

Troopers with Florida Highway Patrol haven't been able to track down 68-year old Robert Bates of Sanford.

They have, however, canceled the "Be on the lookout alert" for the Central Florida man .

Troopers say the Sanford man may have been behind the wheel of the tractor trailer that crashed into two people on the side of the turnpike in Fort Pierce Monday night.

FHP officials say Vincent Mathews and Mariah King, both of Polk County, were changing a flat tire on their car when they were hit by the tractor trailer. The couple died at the scene.

Investigators say the tractor trailer kept traveling north.

It was spotted on a traffic camera in the Orlando area.

The truck and trailer both have Illinois plates.

The tractor's plate reads P769293.

The trailer's plate reads T495080.

If you know where Bates may be, or the tractor trailer, you're asked to contact Corporal Robert Ruiz from FHP at 772-467-3703 ext. 3126 or email
