FORT PIERCE, Fla. - A person is hospitalized in critical condition from a gunshot incident Sunday night in the city’s northwest neighborhoods, according to the St. Lucie County Fire District.
Fort Pierce Police responded to the 800 Block of North 21st Street just after 9 p.m. to investigate a reported shooting incident. When officers arrived, they found the victim, indentified as Marcus Sanders, 18, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Sanders was transported to the local hospital with life-threatening injuries. A police investigation revealed that Sanders was a passenger inside a vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Since Jan. 1, the city has had 41 incidents of gunfire. Nineteen people have been hit, with seven of them killed. Most incidents occurred in the city’s northwest neighborhoods.
An effort is under way to organize the community into an anti-gang effort modeled after the federal Comprehensive Gang Model, which U.S. Department of Justice officials said has been successfully used in other parts of the nation for years.
