Student thought she saw someone in the woods with a weapon
Lawnwood Elementary School was placed on lockdown Monday after a girl thought she saw someone near school with a gun, though law enforcement officials haven't found anything, a Fort Pierce police spokesman said.
FORT PIERCE, Fla. - A report of a gunman forced Lawnwood Elementary to be placed on lockdown for a time Monday morning.
A student reported that she may have seen an armed person in the woods near the campus.
"Just before 11 we had a third grader report that she saw a man in a wooded area across the street, possibly had a shotgun, knives around his belt," said Fort Pierce Deputy Chief Gregory Kirk.
Police fanned out, set up a perimeter and conducted a room to room search.
They also used a K9s to search the woods. They did not find anyone.
"It doesn't necessarily mean it was a false report, it just may mean that maybe it was a transient or somebody the little third grader didn't know what she was looking at," Kirk said.
He said he commends the student for coming forward.
Police will have extra patrols in the area.
