FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Fort Pierce Police say Kent Canty wasn't just running from them as they tried to pull him over. He was running from them with an unrestrained baby in the car.
Now, the Fort Pierce father, 27, is behind bars at the St. Lucie County Jail, accused of not only fleeing from police but child neglect and marijuana possession, as well.
Police say it started when Canty was driving 43 in a 25-mile-per-hour zone down South 13th Street in Fort Pierce.
An officer says he followed the speeding car and turned on his lights, in an attempt to pull Canty over.
"When the subject went north of 25th Street, it became clear that he wasn't going to stop," said Fort Pierce Police Spokesman Dennis McWilliams.
Dash Cam Video
Police have dash cam video of the pursuit. At 25th Street and Okeechobee Road, Canty is seen running a red light. The officer stays back. The next light is 25th and Delaware Avenue. Police say here, Canty rams into the back of another vehicle then gets out of his car and flees.
Dash cam video records an officer saying, "A baby in the car!"
You can hear the surprise in his voice when he finds Canty's infant in the car.
"To be running from the police with the child in the car is unconscionable, but then to leave that child in the car, not in a car seat, not restrained, and abandon a six-month-old baby, that's just unacceptable," said McWilliams.
Police captured Canty and transported him to the St. Lucie County Jail. Officers say they found 40 grams of marijuana in his vehicle. Police say one of Canty's relatives is now caring for the baby.
Officers say Canty was already wanted for two outstanding warrants: suspended license and domestic battery. His bond is set at $66,500.
