Joy's Ice Cream Plus victim of apparent vandalism, power shut off, $2,000 worth of ice cream melts

FORT PIERCE — As far as meltdowns go, this one was sticky sweet.

All the ice cream and specialty cakes at Joy’s Ice Cream Plus melted, apparently due to a vandal who turned off the power overnight, according to a police report.

When owners arrived at the store, in the 4900 block of South U.S. 1, on Friday they found the store warm and freezers not operating, causing an estimated $2,000 in merchandise to melt into a cosmopolitan mess.

At the rear of the store, the main electrical switch for the store’s freezer units was off. All the other switches were on.

Police plan to review store surveillance recordings that the owner said show a person loitering or entering the area by the switch.

The store was closed the night before at 9:45 p.m. when electricity was powering four display cases and several commercial freezers, the reports state.
