Jose Raya convicted of murdering wife; deputies say it happened in front of their 2 young children

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - A St. Lucie County man, who sheriff's deputies say murdered his wife while their two young children were home, has been sentenced to life plus twenty five years in prison.

They say Jose Raya shot his wife Maria Yolanda Aguilar to death on July 18, 2010.

She died at their home at 2815 South 27th Street.

Raya, according to investigators, tried to kill himself with the same weapon that he used to shoot his wife.

Circuit Judge Dan L. Vaughn sentenced Raya to life plus 25 years Thursday after Raya pleaded no contest to second-degree murder with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The murder, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff's office, was Raya's second homicide.

He was arrested in 1986 after he shot a man to death at a bar in Indiantown.

Raya eventually pleaded no contest to attempted manslaughter and served a one-year jail term.
