Joe Biden in Fort Pierce: Vice President to visit Lincoln Park Academy Friday, how to get tickets

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — Vice President Joe Biden is slated for a Fort Pierce campaign stop Friday as the White House and its GOP competition keep targeting the Treasure Coast as a top Florida battleground.

Biden will speak Friday in the gym at Lincoln Park Academy, 1806 Ave I, in Fort Pierce.

He will also appear Friday in Sun City, and stay in Florida for campaign events Saturday. With the vice president's St. Lucie trip, the region continues to be one of the country's hottest presidential campaign destinations over about the last month. Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney both have stirred up St. Lucie County with visits since the start of September. The only local appearance missing is GOP vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan, who likewise has been bouncing around the up-for-grabs state. Ryan, R-Wisc., will be at a fundraiser in Boca Raton on Friday.

Romney and his wife Ann revved up a base of 13,000 supporters at Tradition Town Square two weeks ago. U.S. Rep. Allen West, a Palm Beach Gardens Republican seeking a Treasure Coast-anchored congressional seat, was Romney's opening act. The former Massachusetts governor grabbed a late lunch for the road at Tin Fish Restaurant in Tradition afterward.

Obama's hankering for pizza made national news early last month.

After speaking in Melbourne, Obama stopped at Big Apple Pizza in Fort Pierce en route to another engagement in West Palm Beach. What ensued has become known as Scott Van Duzer 's infamous presidential "bear hug." Out of excitement, Van Duzer lifted Obama off the ground with a hug. The moment became the next day's top photo in The New York Times. The Van Duzer hug also essentially became part of the menu.

Obama then stopped at his campaign headquarters in Port St. Lucie and made a call or two.

On the Republican side, the GOP's last presidential hopeful is on board for a Fort Pierce visit himself.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is scheduled to appear at the Navy UDT-SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce next Oct. 24. McCain plans to show up as part of a Veterans for Romney tour event which will start at 3:25 p.m., said Museum Executive Director Rick Kaiser.
