Joe Biden Fort Pierce visit: Vice President to speak at Lincoln Park Academy this afternoon

Paul Ryan visiting West Palm Beach

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- For those who have tickets to hear Vice President Joe Biden speak at Lincoln Park Academy this afternoon, the doors for the event will open at 2 p.m., campaign and School District officials said.

All tickets for the event have been distributed, a campaign official said.

Biden is scheduled to speak at about 3:20 p.m. in the Fort Pierce magnet school's gymnasium, 1806 Ave I. School dismissal is at 1:34 p.m.

Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan will be in West Palm Beach this afternoon at Jet Aviation 1515 Perimeter Road.

The Obama campaign is renting the gymnasium from the St. Lucie County School District at a cost of $6,271.79 — the standard rate the district charges organizations for renting facilities, said Marty Sanders, the district's executive director of growth management, land acquisition, intergovernmental relations, facilities and maintenance.

The event won't change any school plans or affect student schedules, school district officials said.

The fire marshal visited Lincoln Park Academy on Thursday to determine its safety capacity, Sanders said. The gymnasium's "educational occupancy" is about 1,200, but the event is not educational, so it could hold more, he said.

Campaign officials would not divulge the number of tickets issued.

Biden also will appear Friday in Sun City, and stay in Florida for campaign events Saturday.

With the vice president's St. Lucie trip, the region continues to be one of the country's hottest presidential campaign destinations over about the last month. President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney both have stirred up St. Lucie County with visits since the start of September.

The only local appearance missing is GOP vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan, who likewise has been bouncing around the up-for-grabs state. Ryan, R-Wisc., will be at a fundraiser in Boca Raton on Friday.
