A handful of homes were evacuated Monday morning due to a brush fire in St. Lucie County.
The fire began in the 5700 block of Spanish River Road in northern Fort Pierce, according to the St. Lucie County Fire District.
Flames approached to within 20 feet of the homes, fire officials said.
First responders were able to knock down the flames and no buildings or people were injured, the fire district said.
