FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Some 50 acres will be burned in Fort Pierce to help restore healthy forests and natural communities.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Savannas Preserve State Park is expected to conduct a prescribed burn on Wednesday.
The prescribed burn will consist of approximately 50 acres of pine flatwoods community and pasture grasses.
State fire officials say prescribed burning mimics natural fire cycles to also reduce undergrowth that accumulates over time and decreases the potential for wildfire.
Burned lands experience an increase in native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.
