FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The Fort Pierce Police Department arrested a 53-year-old man on charges of sexual battery on a child after investigators say he raped a 9-year-old girl who was looking for cat that had gone into his house.
Police say on Wednesday that they responded to reports of a sexual assault that occurred in the 800 block of North 23rd Street at the residence of Emanuel Dawson.
The 9-year-old victim, who was accompanied by her mother and a victim's advocate, met with police investigators and told them that she was looking for her cat and saw it run into Dawson's home.
She saw the cat run into Dawson's laundry room so she followed behind. When the girl had collected the cat, she turned to leave and Dawson blocked the door, according to a police report.
Police say Dawson sexually assaulted the child at least two times and then let her leave. The victim told police that Dawson told her not to return or he'd do it again.
Police responded to Dawson's residence to investigate and were greeted by Dawson's daughter at the front door. His daughter said Dawson was upstairs. Police say Dawson jumped out of the second story window but was quickly caught.
When asked why he jumped out of the window, police say he said that he thought the "bad guys were coming to get him."
