Dan Hussan: School documents show arrested St. Lucie County teacher was investigated in 2011

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - New information about the St. Lucie County teacher arrested last week for lewd conduct with six students. School documents reveal that wasn't the first time this teacher has been investigated.

WPTV obtained a look at these documents inside Dan Hussan's personnel file. It includes a notice of investigation letter dated in September of 2011 alleging inappropriate contact with "a student".  The language arts teacher is placed on temporary desk assignment and not allowed on school property.

One month later in October 2011 there's another letter asking Hussan to meet with the personnel department. This time it refers to alleged inappropriate contact with "students".   We were not allowed to look at a confidential folder in Hussan's file and don’t know how the investigation concluded but Hussan was allowed to return to the classroom.

Later that school year he receives a positive review. The principal notes Hussan is a "dedicated and competent instructor who has been a positive addition".

Parents we spoke with were surprised to hear about the prior allegations.

"The school systems really need to dig deeper when they have these allegations that come up," says parent Melissa Bell.

Hussan was first hired in St. Lucie County in 2006. A 2008 review by the principal at Lincoln Park Academy shows glowing marks. However, a few months later that same principal sends Hussan a letter to say "I will not be recommending you for appointment" for the next school year.

Hussan was terminated by the school system but then rehired a few months later to teacher at a different school, Fort Pierce Westwood High School. There was no explanation.

The Superintendent did not respond to our request for a comment.

The 68-year-old teacher now sits in jail accused of lewd conduct toward 6 teenage girls. In the arrest report, students told investigators that Hussan touched them inappropriately and made sexual comments. The current allegations date back to August 2013.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office says they were not aware of any previous allegations against Hussan.
