FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Police have arrested a man suspected of teaming up with another man to rob a couple at gunpoint in front of their 2-year-old daughter.
Albert Smith, 21, of Fort Pierce was arrested Friday and charged with robbery with a firearm, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, and possession of a weapon by a felon.
He is being held at the St. Lucy County jail on $515,000 bail.
Police say Smith and an accomplice Wednesday accosted Gabriel Valentine-Sandoval, his wife, Elizabeth Rivera, and their daughter as they were about to enter their Live Oak Villas apartment off South 27th Street, according to the arrest report.
The two men, who followed them to the top of some stairs, told the couple to hand over their purse and wallet, the report said. Valentine-Sandoval acted hesitant to give up his wife's handbag, prompting one of the robbers to strike him on the side of the head, knocking him down.
Both robbers ran to a car and drove off.
Although the duo wore masks made of white sheets, Valentine-Sandoval recognized one of them as Smith, the report says.
Valentine-Sandoval's descriptions of the gun led police to think it was the same Glock pistol used in a string of robberies in the area, including one in which the gun was photographed by a surveillance camera.
Two days later, police pulled over three people in a car at an undisclosed location. Smith was in the back seat with a Glock in reach, the report states.
The car's two other occupants told police the gun belonged to Smith, the report said.
Police are still searching for the second suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 800-273-TIPS.
The Live Oak Villas complex, where the robbery took place, was also the site of a shooting early Saturday that left an unidentified man critically wounded.
