2 killed in hit-and-run crash on Florida's Turnpike near Fort Pierce

UPDATE:

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash on the northbound lanes of Florida's Turnpike near mile marker 166 in Fort Pierce Monday evening, said Sgt. Mark Wysocky, spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol.

The two victims, whose identities were not released pending notification of next-of-kin, were attempting to change a flat tire on the east shoulder of the roadway around 7:45 p.m. when a tractor-trailer traveling northbound on the turnpike struck them and the disabled vehicle, Wysocky said.

The victims died at the scene. The dark-colored Perterbilt tractor-trailer with Illinois plates fled the scene northbound on the turnpike. The tractor-trailer was pulling a flatbed trailer and should have right-front damage, Wysocky said.

Tag numbers are: P769293 (TRACTOR) and T495080 (TRAILER).

The accident blocked the right northbound lane of the turnpike for several hours.
