ST. LUCIE COUNTY — One person was killed and two others were injured in a crash that blocked at the St. Lucie County/Indian River County line Thursday afternoon, according to the St. Lucie County Fire District.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the 12:25 p.m. crash in the 6700 block of Johnston Road in St. Lucie County, which becomes 43rd Avenue Southwest in Indian River County.
Traffic was blocked on each side of the crash as of 1:40 p.m. Southbound traffic on 43rd Avenue Southwest was being rerouted at 21st Street Southwest. Northbound traffic also was being rerouted at 25th Street Southwest.
The wreck occurred when Roberta Lee Wilson, 77, of Fort Pierce was traveling southbound in a 2004 Crown Victoria on 43rd Avenue SW.
A second vehicle, a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Yehia Ahmed Moustafa, 67, of Fort Pierce, was traveling northbound on 43rd Avenue SW.
For an undetermined reason, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Wilson's car veered into the northbound lane. The front of her car struck the front Volkswagen Jetta.
Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Moustafa and a passenger, Florence Marietta Farley, 79, of Fort Pierce, were taken to Lawnwood Medical Center with serious injuries.
