Fort Pierce Central High School employee accused of sex with minor

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. - A Fort Pierce Central High School employee is under arrest and accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office says Delrico Detavis Choates, 29, of Port St. Lucie faces charges of unlawful sexual activity with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The sheriff's office says he is a campus monitor at Fort Pierce Central.
"This is a serious matter, and when we learned from a school official that this activity may have occurred, we immediately began our investigation. This morning, the suspect admitted the sexual activity, and we arrested him," St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said in a release.

The sheriff's office says someone discovered a conversation on Twitter between Choates and the victim that was reportedly sexual in nature.  Detectives say the victim and Choates told them that he took the girl to his home in Port St. Lucie to watch a movie.  Both admitted that's where they engaged in sexual activity.

Students at Fort Pierce Central say Choates was known as Rico.  Campus monitors are assigned to maintain order and security at the school.

"They just make sure you're in like dress code and following school rules," says student Jordan Miller.

According to reports, Choates has also worked as an assistant wrestling coach at the school.

Parents say they're stunned by the news.

"How can this happen," asks Darlene Craddock, "Were there any signs or any background checks?"

The St. Lucie County School District released this statement: The consistent and primary concern of Saint Lucie County Public Schools is always the safety, security and welfare of the students we serve. This is a criminal law enforcement investigation and employees will proceed through the established process. The active investigation prohibits school officials from comment

Bond was set for Choates at $15,750.
