PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - Investigators continue to run toxicology reports on the Palm Beach driver who told police she took medications Wednesday morning before causing two accidents.
Ikuyo Ohigashi's white Mitsubishi is covered in dents, scratches and broken glass, according to police, telling the story of what happened Wednesday.
Arrest reports say just after noon in suburban Lake Worth, Ohigashi hit a man riding a bicycle on State Road 802. The 65-year-old cyclist suffered a brain injury, fractured ribs and a bruised lung. He was sent by Trauma Hawk to Delray Medical Center for treatment. At last check, the hospital listed him in "fair" condition.
Friends of the victim say the man spends a few months every year in Palm Beach County. They hope he will make a full recovery.
When responding to the scene involving the cyclist, police officers noticed additional scratches on Ohigashi's car. They soon linked them to a hit-and-run less than two hours earlier on Peruvian Avenue in Palm Beach. That's where, police say, Ohigashi hit a Dumpster which slid into a parked car before she fled the scene.
Reports say at her arrest, Ohigashi passed a breathalyzer test for alcohol, but she was unsteady on her feet. She told police she had taken Vicodin and Xanax earlier that morning.
In court at her first appearance Thursday, the judge ordered Ohigashi to surrender her passport and post $100 thousand bail to get out of jail.
