Robert Sims Jr., Delray Beach sex offender, arrested Tuesday on rape charge

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- A Delray Beach man who was released from prison less than two months ago was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly raped a woman early Tuesday morning at Pompey Park.

Robert Sims Jr., 57, is accused of grabbing a 48-year-old woman off of her bicycle and raping her in the dugout of a baseball field. Sims, who lives in the 1300 block of Lee Street, is a registered sex offender who was convicted of sexual battery in April of 2004. He was released from the Florida Department of Corrections on May 7.

He was transported from the Delray Beach Police Department Tuesday evening to be booked at the Palm Beach County Jail. When questioned by reporters as he was leaving the police department, Sims denied having any knowledge of the incident and stated that police were lying.

He admitted to having sex with the woman, but claimed that it was consensual, said Sgt. Nicole Guerriero, spokeswoman for the Deraly Beach said.

"All of these allegations are taken very seriously, Guerriero said. "However, in this case, especially because the suspect in this case is a registered sex offender. We conduct monthly checks on him, we're familiar with him….so we are familiar with his history. "

According to the arrest report, the victim told police that she was riding her bicycle at about 1 a.m. in the 200 block of Northwest 10th Avenue. The woman said she spoke to a friend for a few minutes before heading through the park towards the baseball fields. The woman said that she noticed a man sitting in the dugout.

As she rode past the dugout, the man, later identified as Sims, allegedly came out and grabbed her bicycle. Sims forced the woman off the bicycle and brought her into the dugout, the report said. The woman alleged that Sims held her down as he sexually assaulted her and then forced her to perform other sex acts.

The woman said that, at some point during the assault, she grabbed a pair of tweezers from her purse and stabbed Sims in the chest and neck. After the incident, she went to a cousin's apartment and then walked to a Delray Beach Fire Station to seek medical attention because of a heart condition, the report said.

The woman was later taken to Bethesda Memorial Hospital.

Police found injuries to Sims that were consistent with the woman's story, Guerriero said. After officers located Sims, he gave his version of what happened.

Sims stated that he sometimes sleeps on the bench in baseball dugouts. He claimed that he had sex with a woman who exchanged sex for drugs.

He declined to speak any further and invoked his right to remain silent, according to the report.
