The Delray Beach police department teamed up with an orphanage to help Haitians recover from Hurricane Matthew.

The department is collecting items for the Be Like Brit Foundation.

Parents of Lynn University student Britney Gengel launched the foundation after their daughter died in Haiti during the 2010 earthquake.

The foundation runs an orphanage and helps build homes in the southern part of Haiti. Hurricane Matthew passed right over the region, killing hundreds. The foundation’s building wasn’t damaged. Now administrators are helping their Haitian neighbors rebound from the mess.

Co-founder, Len Gengel, said the generosity from Delray Beach is heartwarming. Soon the foundation will open an office in the city.

“She loved Atlantic Ave and the excitement here, and the people. So it warms our heart. Which is why we’ve chosen Delray Beach to open a southern Florida location,” Gengel explained.

The widow of a former Delray Beach police officer now works at the foundation’s orphanage in Haiti.

You can drop off food, medicine and hygiene products at the Delray Beach police station Monday and Tuesday, November 21 and 22.
