Union backed commission candidate Kurt Lehmann loses in blowout

Mayor and union-backed candidate lose in Delray

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - Political upheaval in Delray Beach.

Two candidates who said they were taking on the establishment were victorious.

Unofficial results showed former planning and zoning board chair Cary Glickstein beating incumbent Mayor Tom Carney by around four percentage points.

"We ran a different kind of campaign – about better ideas and getting results - and I'm really happy it worked out so well.   It will be exciting to work together to lead our town into the future," Glickstein said in a statement.

The initial count showed Shelly Petrolia defeating Kurt Lehmann, who had the support of Delray Beach's police, fire and real estate unions.

Petrolia likely notched a blowout win, with tallies showing her ahead by thirty points.

"The people have said that this city is not about the establishment," Petrolia said.

Petrolia also says that the commission will get along well and be able to get things done.

"We will accomplish for the citizens," she said.
