South Florida K-9 competition tests skills and partnership between the officer and his canine

Jennifer Wing came to cheer on her son and his K-9 partner, Big Papa Thor.

"Proud, that's really all I can say,” said Wing.

Her son is an officer with the City of Miami Police Department.

"No matter where we go he's the biggest dog around he fluctuates between 100 and 105 pounds,” said Officer Garrret Wing, Thor’s partner.

The South Florida K-9 competition tests the skills and partnerships between the officer and his canine partner. These German Shepherd’s have already been certified. Being their day off though, it took some dogs a few tries to get it right. Officer Wing and Thor have been partners for five years.

"With all the technology we have the computers they still haven't found anything that can pick up the scent of a bad guy or narcotics or anything like they do,” said Wing.

Wing says the officers in the K-9 unit spend at least 400 hours of training with their dog. He says these dogs are a major asset in solving crimes and keeping officers safe.

"You gotta be able to trust him to tell you where that bad guy is before the bad guy knows you're there hopefully,” said Wing.
