Boynton Beach Boulevard reopens near Turnpike after deadly crash

A deadly crash on Boynton Beach Boulevard near the Florida Turnpike shut down both the east and westbound lanes of the boulevard Wednesday.

Traffic investigators say a Jeep driven by Clarence Stalsworth of Sevierville, Tennessee struck the rear of a Chrysler driven by Anthony Distefano of Boca Raton.

Both vehicles were traveling westbound on Boynton Beach Boulevard and were approaching Orchid Grove Trial, just east of the Turnpike.

The Chrysler ended up on the grass on the north side of the road.

Stalsworth hit some low-lying palm trees and then struck a large power pole, snapping it in two pieces, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Stalsworth and a passenger were transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. His passenger, Nell Stalsworth, received minor injuries. Distefano was not hurt.

Some customers are without power.

Florida Power & Light is working to replace the pole and wires, and restore electricity.

The northbound and southbound Turnpike exits at Boynton Beach Boulevard reopened, according to the Florida Highway Patrol website.
