BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - A sergeant from the Boynton Beach Police Department rescued a seven-week old puppy from a canal near the 14100 block of Mahogany Drive after it fell in the water, the department said.
Matt Zeller, who joined the department in 2005, rescued Alana, a Siberian husky, on Tuesday afternoon.
Tatiana Idrobo said she was playing ball with Alana near the canal when the dog heard what Idrobo thought was the sound of a duck.
The dog, she said, slipped out of her collar and fell down a seven-foot embankment into the canal.
Zeller arrived on the scene a few minutes after she fell into the water.
"I thank God for the SWAT officer. He came just in time and pretty much saved the day," Idrobo said. "He jumped into the canal. And, he saw her. He grabbed her. And, was able to get her out just in time. She was swallowing a lot of water. [I'm] just glad to have here here."
Zeller was at a training exercise in the area when he heard the dispatcher report the call.
